India has a $100 billion opportunity
India has a $100 billion opportunity in manufacturing laptops and tablets in the country in the next five years which can contribute to 26% of this market (18% to global exports) of these devices, according to research by consulting firm EY and electronics manufacturing body ICEA.
China is the predominant supplier of laptops, tablets & desktops holding 66% share of the global market for these products which stood at $240.99 billion in 2019. Currently, 87% laptops and 63% tablets are imported mostly from China for fulfilling domestic demand of India.
If government is able to address the disabilities like taxes, cost of machinery, land, power, labour and working capital etc., it would not only make India one of the major importers of laptops and tablets but also create 5 lakh additional jobs and a cumulative inflow of foreign exchange to the tune of US$ 75 billion. This will also reduce trade deficit and make India self-reliant.
